Neck Pain
"Starts in the neck and can be associated with radiating pain down one or both of the arms."
NECK PAIN in or around the spine beneath your head, known as the cervical spine. Neck pain is a common symptom of many different injuries and medical conditions. It can be either postural or mechanical. The cervical spine is responsible for supporting the weight of the head and it should be flexible enough to allow rotation, flexion, extension, and lateral flexion to occur.
5 Common contributor to Neck Pain:
[1] Muscle strains – Neck strains are caused by overuse of the neck muscles such as too many hours sat hunched in a chair.
[2] Weakness – Training the upper traps more than the lower and mid traps may lead to overstimulation of the upper traps resulting in neck pain.
[3] Worn joints – As we age our joints in the neck become worn down. Osteoarthritis causes the cartilage between vertebrae to deteriorate. This can then cause osteophytes to form that can affect range of motion and cause pain.
[4] Nerve compression – Herniated disks or osteophytes in the vertebrae of your neck can press on the nerves branching out from the intervertebral foramen.
[5] Injuries – Motor collisions and sporting injuries can often result in whiplash injury, which occurs when the head is jerked backward and then forward, straining the soft tissues of the neck.
6 Surprising Risk Factors for Neck Pain:
Don't Ignore These!
[1] Whiplash Injuries
This injury due to muscles in our neck experience extreme tension due to the movement of the head back and forth in a fast state. Usually this happens during a vehicle accident, fall or collision. Patients with this problem will experience neck pain and stiffness, headaches, dizziness and blurred vision
[2] Posture
Bad posture such as (head is too bowed/ too forward) when using a computer or mobile phone, will cause the neck muscles to be too tense. The neck also has to work more to accommodate the weight of the head. This in turn causes the neck to become sore and tense. Over time can cause headaches
[3] Tension Headaches
Tension headache is one of the most common types of headaches. Patients with this problem will experience pain in the head, a feeling of tightness in the neck and pain in the back of the eyes
[4] Sleeping in an awkward position
If the head is held at a bad angle or twists wrong during the night, a stiff neck might be present in the morning
[5] Repetitive motions
Turning the head in a repetitive manner, such as side to side while dancing or swimming, may lead to overuse of the neck’s muscles, tendons, and ligaments
